Legislative Update

Secretary of State Linda McCulloch sponsored 2 election-related bills in the 2009 Montana Legislative Session:

  • Senate Bill 155 is a bill that will allow county election officials to conduct random-sample post-election audits of their vote tabulating equipment. This legislation will provide transparency to the vote counting process, and will instill confidence in Montana voters that their votes are being counted accurately.
  • Senate Bill 156 changes the first and last day for candidate filing to 10 days earlier than previously provided. Candidate filing for 2010 will open January 14 and close March 15. The legislation was an effort to provide more time for county election officials to verify and submit ballot information to ballot printing companies.

Some of the other election-related bills that passed in the 2009 Session are:

You must have completed and submitted your candidate filing by Monday, March 15 at 5:00 p.m. MDT or it will not be processed. Please call (406) 444-5376 or (406) 444-4732 if you encounter any problems with the online filing service.
