The process by which Montana conducts elections and counts votes wins praise and interest from around the nation. But it takes every single one of us to keep it that way. I’m asking you to get involved, and get your friends involved.

It’s not too early to register to vote! Maybe you missed the primary election. Maybe you just moved here. Maybe you just moved from one Montana town to another. Whatever the reason, if you need to register to vote again, this is the time to do it!

How do I know if I need to register?

Well, if you voted in the June 3 primary election and you have not changed address, then you do not need to register to vote.

If you can remember voting four years ago on whether George Bush or John Kerry should be president, and you haven’t moved, you don’t need to register to vote.

If neither of those things are true, it’s probably a good idea to check your voter registration.

How do I check my voter registration?

The simplest way is to call your county election office. Here’s a list of contact information for Election Officials all around Montana. They will tell you whether you are registered to vote. Or, you can call my office at 1-888-884-8683. We can tell you whether you’re registered to vote. You can also e-mail my office at soselection@mt.gov. Make sure to include your name and tell us what county you live in. We can tell you whether you’re registered to vote.

What happens if I’m not registered?

You get the opportunity to register to vote! You can get registered the same way you checked on your registration. You can contact your county election office, you can call 1-888-884-8683 and talk to us, or you can e-mail us. When you do any of those things, a voter registration card will be sent to you. Simply fill it out and return it to your county election office. That’s it, you’re registered to vote!

You can also get registered by visiting this web site and downloading the voter registration form. Print it out, fill it out, and mail it to your county elections office.

What happens after I register?

That’s when the good part begins. Voting is only the final step. In the months leading up to the election, you can study the candidates and the issues. You can learn what each of them will mean for the future of our state. And when you go to the polls to cast that vote, you’ll be casting an informed ballot that makes a real difference to Montana and the United States.

The election is November 4. Perhaps that seems like a lot of time to procrastinate. But not if you’re going to truly know the issues and cast an informed vote. Register to vote today.
